Domestic Violence
Genesis Counseling offers both male and female Domestic Violence groups. The
length of treatment is a minimum of 36 sessions with each session being a
hour and a half in duration.
The focus of our Domestic Violence program is to incorporate taking
responsibility for previous behavior while developing a greater awareness
and insight into the self in order to eliminate such behavior in the future.
Genesis Counseling also offers an intensive Domestic Violence program for
high-risk offenders. Our intensive program includes weekly individual and
group sessions.
In addition to treating the offender, Genesis Counseling offers victim
services. Victim contact is made on a regular basis to assure more effective
treatment and to assess potential lethality.
Offender Specific
Other groups include standardized offender programs, especially geared
toward ISP and DOC clients. These gender-specific and mixed groups address
criminal conduct, alcohol and drug use, and the relationship between the
two. Generally, these groups are two hours long and 24 weeks in duration.
Anger Management
Genesis Counseling’s Anger Management program is 16, 20 or 24 weeks in
duration, based on presenting offense, clinical indicators, and
probation/court requirements. The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory is
used to assess each clients experience (intensity) of anger and to identify
how they typically respond to anger (outward expression or inward
suppression). Participants learn how to better identify anger triggers and
anger indicators as well as methods to reduce the intensity of their anger
and appropriate expressions of anger.
Cognitive Therapy Strategies for Self-Improvement and
Change (SSC)
Genesis Counseling’s Cognitive Therapy program
consists of three phases.
Phase I – Challenge to Change: This 18-session program deals with
motivating the client to change by developing a rapport and trust and
helping them to understand their thinking patterns, behaviors, and beliefs
which lead them to criminal conduct, alcohol and drug abuse.
Phase II – Commitment to change: This 22-session program teaches coping,
social and communication skills needed to strengthen the client’s basic
skills for self-improvement and change. We enhance their thinking and
behavioral patterns in the areas of criminal conduct and drug abuse.
Phase III – Taking Ownership of change: This 10-session program deals with
maintaining the client’s sobriety and new life. We strengthen their
awareness of and reinforce skills to manage high-risk thinking, actions, and
situations that may lead to relapse.
Marijuana; – "A Reality Check"
Our Marijuana specific group is a 12, 16 or 20 week program designed to
explore the social and personal issues which lead to marijuana use and
abuse. This program contains three stages: Identification, Personal
Assessment and Skill Building. Separate groups exist for both adults
and adolescents.
Stimulant Group
Genesis Counseling, the agency that introduced “Marijuana - A Reality Check”,
also offers the first 20-week program specific to stimulant users and
abusers, such as methamphetamine, cocaine, crack, and amphetamines.
Stimulants are highly toxic and addictive drugs which are now being used in
many areas of the country and their use is increasing among populations not
previously known to use these drugs. Research shows that stimulants are
powerfully addictive drugs that dramatically affect many areas of the
central nervous system and are associated with serious health conditions,
including memory loss, aggression, violence, psychotic behavior, and
potential heart and neurological damage. They also contribute to increased
transmission of infectious disease, especially hepatitis and HIV/ AIDS.
The focus of this program is to help clients identify the personal effects
that stimulant drugs have had on them as well as develop a strong sobriety
plan in order to reduce or eliminate the risk of relapse.
Adolescent Services
Recognizing the specific needs and issues of Adolescents, Genesis Counseling
has multiple groups geared specifically towards this age group. Typically
participants range from thirteen to seventeen years old. Groups include:
Anger Management, Dating Conflict Resolution, Drug Specific/Poly Drug Abuse,
Alcohol Abuse, and Letter of Apology Writing. Monitored Sobriety Services as
well as Individual Treatment is also available.
Empathy
This group is designed specifically to assist offenders in gaining a better
understanding and appreciation for the impact their actions have had on the
victim(s) of their crime as well as the community at large. Empathy classes
are a minimum of ten weeks in duration and are tailored to the specific
needs of each client.
Parenting
“Effective Parenting” classes are a minimum of eight weeks in duration.
Topics such as enhancing the effectiveness of communication between parent
and child, stress management, developmental stages and appropriate behavior
for each stage, and creating stronger parent-child bonds are all explored.
Information and techniques employed are drawn from a variety of sources and
clients are encouraged to explore alternatives to their current behaviors
and beliefs in order to create their own Effective Parenting
Coming soon: Parenting and Divorce Seminar (court mandated
class for parents getting a divorce in the 18th Judicial District).
